It was his favourite place to spend time with his friends. On March 5, Mani was brought in a serious condition from his outhouse in his hometown Chalakudy. The actor, who loved his tipple, was reportedly suffering from liver-related illness and doctors had advised him to exercise caution. Mani breathed his last at a private hospital in Kochi and soon after his death, speculation surfaced that this was not a natural death as the hospital authorities reported the presence of a chemical in his body. Top political leaders from across parties also paid their last respects to Mani. He won the National Film Award and Kerala State Film Award in 1999 for his performance as Ramu in "Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum".His body was moved to three different places for the public to pay their homage, before it was brought to his home for his last journey. Mani who started his career as a mimicry artiste acted in over 200 films, including Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu films, and is especially known for his character and villain roles. CBI carried out a probe into his death and filed a report that there is no mystery in his death and concluded that he died of liver ailment.
